When Kendall and Julianne Scavo were 8 years old, their parents, Tina and Ken, gave them a Christmas gift that changed their lives.
Julianne, 32, shared with TODAY on July 27 that their parents revealed an extraordinary present that couldn’t be wrapped. That night, they discovered they weren’t twins but part of a set of triplets, with their sister, Rikki Jump, living just 40 miles away in Colorado.
In 1991, a pregnant mail carrier named Kathleen discovered she was expecting triplets.
According to Rikki, Kathleen was scared. Kathleen’s husband, Lee, 58 with two grown children from a previous marriage, had undergone a vasectomy before meeting Kathleen. They used donor sperm, and Kathleen reluctantly agreed to have a baby.
Facing financial challenges, Kathleen and Lee decided to place two of their daughters for adoption.
Kathleen and Lee took Rikki home, while Kendall and Julianne began their life with adoptive parents Ken and Tina Scavo. Initially, no one knew Rikki and Julianne were identical twins.
After discovering Rikki’s existence, Kendall and Julianne became pen pals. In a letter, Rikki expressed her longing to embrace both of them.
Then the day they’ve all been dreaming of finally turned into a reality.
Years later, the trio finally met at a mall. Kendall mentioned that her adoptive parents had to overcome fear, thinking they might feel a biological pull towards their birth mom. However, this wasn’t the case.
The meeting at the mall felt natural as if they had known each other forever.
Rikki, aware of Julianne and Kendall, felt the meeting was like a puzzle piece sliding into place.
Julianne found staring at her identical twin a bit jarring, almost like looking in a mirror.
Discussing nature versus nurture, Rikki noted that she and Julianne speak and move similarly.
Now living minutes away from each other in Austin, Texas, the sisters are closer than ever. They co-host a podcast called “Luke, Who is Your Father?” and enjoy group dates with their partners.
As they spend more time together, Kendall mentioned they start to sound and act like each other.
Julianne expressed the importance of her sisters, calling them the most significant people to her. Savannah acknowledged that their story demonstrates how family transcends conventional definitions.
