There are lots of events that teens look forward to in high school – but on the top of many of their lists is prom.
After all, it’s a night of dancing, laughter, and memories that stick with you long after the last song fades.
For Dakota Wollan, a senior from Watford City, N.D., this milestone was approaching with a bit of a twist.
Unlike his peers, Dakota found himself without a date and unsure of who to invite to this hallmark event.
Enter Dakota’s dad with a suggestion that was as unconventional as it was heartwarming.
Why not invite Dakota’s great-grandma, who had never experienced a prom herself?
The idea struck a chord with Dakota.
He saw it not just as a chance to attend prom but as an opportunity to create an unforgettable night for his beloved great-grandma.
With his mind made up, Dakota planned a special “promposal” for his great-grandma.
He took an old truck she had given him—a 1985 Ford that he had lovingly restored—and paired it with a handmade sign to pop the question.
The gesture was touching and filled with personal significance.
Great-grandma Madeline Miller was taken aback by the invitation.
At 92, the thought of attending prom, especially as the date of her great-grandson, was something she couldn’t have imagined.
“I was just wondering why he would want a 92-year-old going to prom with him when there are so many young girls in the school,” she expressed to KFYR-TV, echoing the surprise and humility that the offer brought.
Despite her initial shock, Madeline’s answer was a resounding “yes.”
Dakota had made it clear – if she didn’t accompany him, he wouldn’t attend at all.
For Madeline, who had only attended high school for a year and a half before leaving to help on the family farm, this was an opportunity to experience something entirely new.
As the prom night arrived, Dakota and his great-grandma became the center of attention.
Their entrance was met with cheers and admiration from the crowd.
Although everyone was a special star that night, Dakota and Madeline seemed to steal the show.
Madeline recalled the moment with fondness.
She shared:
“Walking beside my great-grandson, listening to this music as we walked and people clapping and hollering.”
It was a scene that captured the essence of their special relationship and the joy of the occasion.
The highlight of the night was their dance.
It was a moment that not only showcased their bond but also moved many onlookers to tears.
There aren’t many people who can say they danced with their great-grandma at prom, so how wonderful for them!
