Meet Evelyn Mae, the one-year-old Dallas darling who’s taking TikTok by storm with her fabulous “wet set” hairstyle.
Styled by her hairstylist grandmother, Trina King, Evelyn’s look is a hit on her TikTok account, Lil Evie Mae, where she’s seen strutting down sidewalks, driving a toy car in a sparkly purple top, and even making landline calls – all while clutching her favorite candies, Werther’s Original and Strawberry Bon Bon.
Evelyn’s charm recently graced the TODAY show, where she appeared in a pink pantsuit alongside her mom, Autumn Mathas, and grandmother.
They walked onto a set mimicking the iconic Miami house from “Golden Girls,” perfectly in tune with the show’s theme song.
“We’ve been waiting to meet Evelyn Mae for a long time,” exclaimed Hoda Kotb, the show’s host.
Mathas shared that Evelyn’s hair shape, reminiscent of Betty White’s character Rose Nylund from “Golden Girls,” makes her the perfect model.
Hoda Kotb, curious about Evelyn’s comfort with shoulder pads and brooches, remarked, “This child is the most well-behaved child.”
Hoda highlighted the joy Evelyn brings in these trying times, saying, “The world is heavy. We are tired. And you know what Evelyn Mae just did? She just made everything a little bit brighter.”
As a token of appreciation, Hoda gifted Evelyn a TODAY clutch bag filled with Werther’s Originals, humorously adding, “She’s going to look back when she gets older and just crack up — or she’ll be really mad!”
The story behind Evelyn’s “Golden Girls” hairstyle is as charming as her videos.
Trina King, 52, reminisced about her beauty school days and the “wet set” hairstyles she learned to create.
“It’s when you put gel in the hair and wrap it in small rollers and set it under a dryer,” King explains. “When it’s done, you tease it and smooth it out.”
With her daughter’s blessing, King tried the wet set on Evelyn, finding it as natural as “riding a bike.”
The result was so delightful that King couldn’t resist sharing it on TikTok, leading to a series of popular videos.
The comments section is filled with humorous remarks like, “Omg I knew I recognized her. She sold me some Mary Kay last week!” and “Evelyn Mae was my first grade teacher! She hasn’t aged a day!”
King reveals that Evelyn’s styling sessions require the right mood, a full belly, and a good nap.
She credits YouTuber Ms. Rachel as a “savior” for keeping Evelyn content during the 20-minute hair treatment.
The impact of Evelyn’s videos extends beyond mere entertainment.
King shares touching messages from viewers who find comfort in Evelyn’s videos, especially those grieving the loss of grandparents or parents.
One woman’s message, in particular, moved King to tears.
She had asked her late mother for a sign and found it in Evelyn’s video featuring Werther’s Originals, her mother’s favorite candy.
“That touched me,” says King, reflecting on the heartfelt response. With a trove of ideas for future videos, King looks forward to continuing this delightful journey. “What a fun ride,” she concludes.
